My Freshman Year 67-89 Reading Response: In this Chapter, Nathan talks about her new friends that she have been hanging out with lately. She has also talked about getting to know other students who are of another race. One part that actually caught my eye in this chapter, is when she was introduced to three exchanged students who were Japanese. The students had a casual conversation and Nathan decided to invite them to dinner. During the conversation, a very interesting topic came about. People from different countries take different phrases or greetings in different ways. For example, people from Germany say, "How are you?'' to greet people first rathen than saying hi/goodbye. I connected this concept to ClueStep3A where I talked about coming to college and learning new things just by meeting new people from somewhere different. I personally think that college is not only about education and getting your degree but it is also about educating yourself in other cultures. I was very confused about the conversation that she had with Reiko, who have a roommate that is American. She says that her roommate is never there, but when she is there, she gets mad that Reiko changes things such as opening the window or turning up the heat. Her roommate also tells her that they are nothing more than just roommates. When it comes to being in college and having a roommate that does not try to have a friendship with you, I think that there is nothing wrong with that. They often make it seem that you and you're roommate are going to be the best of friends but in reality, there have been plenty of times when I have seen roommates not get along. Sometimes it is very hard to get a long with your roommate, because that person is from somewhere different than you so they do things differently than you. It is okay to not be friends, but I do think that It will be nice to be cordial with your roommate. I live with my best friend because I think that it is very important to live comfortable. Living in an awkward environment can mentally, socially and academically throw you off so that is why I think it is very important to have some kind of cordial respect towards your roommate. Lastly, Nathan states, "For the international students I interviewed, American college culture is a world of engagement, choice, individualism, and independence, but it is also one of cross-culture ignorance and self delusion that cries out for remediation." I thought that this was statement is so accurate.
The Mind At Work "The Intelligence of Plumbing" Reading Response: On page 60, A youth activist Geoffrey Canada in Fist, Stick, Gun, and Knife points out that when children feel that adults or others can not protect them, they find their own way of protecting themselves. I think that this is very true to today's society, because most kids are getting into a lot of trouble only because they feel as though no one is there for them. Now a days, kids have a mentality that no one is there for them and they are going to be on their own and be independent. Little do they know that they are guiding themselves into the wrong direction. Where I am from (Philadelphia), kids are killing kids almost everyday over the littlest things. They are not thinking about the growth in our society because they are killing the society itself. I also think that most parents have a hard time telling their children that they are loved, because they are working hard being that the economy is kind of down right now in America.
